The Synergy of Systems and Systems Thinking

In addition, most systems are complex and contain sub-systems, which also contain sub-systems, which are related to other sub-systems. So, systems thinking, with regards to organizations and commercial job structures, is itself not just one concept. It’s a set of practices that has a framework based on the belief that systems must be comprehended holistically.

Understanding the Complex Network of Systems

Valero refers to the time she spent working as an industrial systems engineer where her attention was directed towards designing solutions for automobiles. That experience helped her understand the nature of the system flow from designing a product through testing and manufacturing and on to shipping and distribution.

She now applies that knowledge to companies and organizations, which she sees as systems in their own right. “An organization’s system consists of people, structures and processes that interact to make the organizations efficient. So, the only way to understand why a problem persists is to understand the parts in relation to the whole, in a holistic manner,” says Valero.
