From auto parts and handbags to prescription drugs and sunglasses, the World Customs Organisation reports that 7% or more of the world's merchandise is counterfeit, amounting to $512 billion worth of fake goods in the marketplace. China tops the list of countries producing counterfeit products, primarily because it is difficult protect intellectual properties when companies share product and packaging specifications with outsourcing providers a world away. Many unscrupulous providers are even bold enough to run illegal "third-shifts" inside legitimate factories.
