Walmart Chops Produce Supply Base
After a pilot program with apple growers in 2009, which resulted in savings of more than 10%, Walmart will now source fruits and vegetables from a much narrower supply base, many of whom are based outside North America. The company's new, more centralized procurement strategy is expected to be rolled out across other lines as well, including perishables. Wal-Mart's senior vice president and manager for perishables and general merchandise, Pam Kohn, says the company has chosen to work with a shorter list of key suppliers to improve product quality, reduce time to market and cut costs by streamlining.
