Lisa Danahy: Making the Most Out of What We Have
  • Group: Supply Chain Today: Continuous Improvement, Technology Innovation, Executive Jobs, Education 10,000+
  • Subject: New comment (3) on "Re-thinking outsourcing to 3PLs in light of recession"

In tough times, investment for any organization must be strategic whether human, intellectual or physical capital. Therefore answering the factors Tiffany mentions above is critical. You must also assess the lost opportunity of not investing in what you do best when you can use 3rd party providers to leverage their labor, technology and physical infrastructure for your non-core or critical activities. A key to making the relationship work is selecting a strategic 3PL that is aligned with your goals and has made and is willing to make investment on your and their other clients' behalf to drive innovation & improvement. Also it is critical to rethink the structure 3PL agreements. Compensation and incentives must drive them to perform to meet customer goals & objectives, not just rewarding volume/transactions.
